Since modern times, Zhang Taiyan, Hu Ying and others have explored the origin of the word “Confucian” from language and history, and have not explored the origin of Confucianism as a thinking system from the most basic perspective. From the perspective of education, we can find that there was a Confucian scholar in the pre-Confucian era, which was composed of the knowledge of the Six Arts and Six Orders, and was used to teach the nations and the people at that time. The Zhou Rong includes the sources and foundations of Confucian educational thinking. From the perspective of virtue, we can find that the Western Zhou civilization put righteous virtue first, which indicates the germination of the concept of governing the country with virtue. The concept of Zhouwen’s virtue, the basic concept of governing the country has been established. The tribute civilization of the Western Zhou Dynasty was the soil of civilization produced by Confucianism. The Western Zhou Dynasty’s thinking provided Confucius and late Confucianism with the main foundation of worldview, political philosophy, and moral character.
The emergence of the Qilu civilization is not an isolated matter. It is constantly developed in the entire process of the development of Chinese civilization. On the one hand, it has something to do with the evolution of the entire Chinese civilization; on the other hand, it has made its own contribution to the overall development of the entire Chinese civilization. This is a basic point for us to study the Qilu civilization tomorrow, which is to say that our discussion on the Qilu civilization is not about looking at the Qilu civilization when it is alone. In many issues, we must trace the structure, occurrence and development of the Qilu civilization back to its assessment in the overall relationship and connection of the entire Chinese civilization process. The thinking and civilization of the Western Zhou Dynasty were based on the historical development of Xia and Shang civilization as the landscape and foundation. The Western Zhou Dynasty can be said to be the period when the civilized form and trend of Chinese civilization began to be determined and formed. The elements of Confucianism before Confucius were precisely the construction of this process and promoted the establishment of the formalization of Chinese civilization. Such a person is called Ru. It can be seen that Zhang Taiyan’s explanation of Confucianism and his prediction of the origin of Confucianism were actually followed by Xu Shen’s thinking. Xu Shen believes that Confucianism is the name of a scholar, and this scholar refers to all scholars with arts.
